VIDEO: Leaders submitting false academic papers are embarrassing to young generation- Kiggundu
The electoral commission has admitted that last month’s court rulings which saw a number of legislators thrown out of parliament over various electoral offences, is a wakeup call for electoral laws to be revised.
While announcing the program for the Parliamentary and local council elections for the newly created districts on Thursday, Electoral Commission chairman, Dr. Badru Kigundu, said it is embarrassing for leaders vying for elective office to utter false documents well knowing that they have people who are conversant with their academic backgrounds who will challenge their academic documents like it happened last month saying it sends a wrong message to the young generation.
“Well, I don’t know what we should do. It is not the work of the electoral commission to verify academic documents; it is the work for the national council for higher education. But even then, when you are submitting your papers, you should do it knowing that they are genuine because while at school there are people you ate mangoes or berries with,” he said when asked if the commission is going to reprimand the affected legislators for wasting the commission’s time, that of the voters and above all tax payers money which has gone to waste over fraudulent elections.
