Makerere students resume protest against tuition increment after suspension of colleagues

Lectures at Makerere University have this morning been disrupted as the strike against 15% tuition policy enters second day.

The strike which started from Mitchel hall of residence saw the striking students fetch their colleagues who were attending lectures at different colleges and forced all of them outside.

At the moment, military and police are engaging in running battles with the students all over the university as they have resorted to using teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the rowdy students.

The vice chancellor prof Barnabas Nawangwe yesterday vowed to suspend any student who will be caught in any disruptive activities.

He says that students are the ones who approved the tuition policy so they should not turn around and protest the policy they asked for. The vice chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe last evening told our reporter that two students had been suspended for allegedly inciting violence.

He named the two as Mollie Siperia (the Guild Representative Councillor for School of psychology and one Frank Bwambale.

By last night, there were reports that students had mobilised to protest management's decision to suspend their colleagues.
