Makerere admits 16,500 on private scheme

What you need to know:

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery course was the most competitive at 45.8cutoff points
  • It was followed by Bachelor of Civil Engineering (day) at 45.7
  • Humanity courses have taken students with as low as 7.7 cutoff points for Bachelor of Commerce at the Nakawa-based affiliate institution

KAMPALA.

At least 16,500 students have been admitted to Makerere University on the private sponsorship scheme, according to a provisional list released yesterday. The list showed science courses as the most competitive.

According to the details and cut-off points released by the Academic Registrar, the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery course was the most competitive followed by Bachelor of Civil Engineering (day) at 45.8 and 45.7cutoffs points respectively. Humanity courses have taken students with as low as 7.7 cutoff points for Bachelor of Commerce at the Nakawa-based affiliate institution.

Mr Charles Ssentongo, the deputy academic registrar, yesterday said the students will pick up their provisional admission letters next week but will only be given full admission letters after paying 60 per cent of the tuition plus all functional fees.

First year students begin their first academic year on August 6. The continuing students will report a week later after paying at least Shs200,000 to the university as commitment fees which is part of their tuition.

This follows a fees policy passed by the University Council, the supreme decision making organ, last week to ensure students pay in time to enable the institution’s managers plan accordingly. The university has in the past been locked in fights with students over delayed payments, crippling business at the 94-year-old institution.

“The new students will be given provisional admission letters next week and can only pick up full admission letters after paying all functional fees and 60 per cent of the tuition,” Mr Ssentongo said.

The Kabarole campus didn’t admit new students as they try to phase out the campus. About 15 courses, majority from the Jinja campus and School of Veterinary Medicine, didn’t attract any private applicants. They include Bachelor of Science in Pig Industry and business, Diploma in Pig Industry, Bachelor of Arts in Development Economics and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Jinja campus, among others.

Speaking at a selection exercise for Senior Five students early this year, Dr Yusuf Nsubuga, Ministry of Education Director Basic Education, asked head teachers to relax entry points to Senior Five, especially for science students, in order to increase the number of students pursuing science courses in higher institutions of learning.

But sources at universities offering sciences, who declined to be quoted, said yesterday it is not possible to take on any grades in science disciplines because training them would require more resources which are not enough.

In addition, the sources said the points for scientists are hiked to limit the number of students because of the few available facilities like laboratories.

“Sciences are practical. It is not like teaching history where you only need a microphone and a book to dictate notes. Here, you require specimens like chemicals which are expensive for any ordinary Ugandan,” the source said.

Former State Minister for Higher Education and Technology Prof Sandy Tickodri last week said Makerere charges below the unit cost for any of its courses which has contributed to some of its financial woes.
He said a medical student should be paying at least Shs10 million annually but currently pays only Shs6 million annually.
