  • Ms Nakayenze said: “My daughter called me that she had picked a letter addressed to me. I immediately called my husband, who advised us to report the matter to police. We reported and I expect police to expedite investigations and arrest the culprits.
  • My daughter already recorded a statement with police.”
The Elgon Region Police spokesperson, Mr Robert Tukei, said police were investigating the matter.

Mbale District Woman Member of Parliament Connie Nakayenze Galiwango and her family members are said to be living in fear after unidentified people dropped an anonymous letter in her compound demanding Shs400 million lest they take her life within this week.

The letter, written in capital letters, which Daily Monitor has seen, is addressed to Ms Nakayenze, a wife to the director of Finance and Administration in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, Dr Hassan Wasswa Galiwango.

The authors, who identify themselves as Ms Nakayenze’s colleagues of Mbale Secondary School of 2009-2012, order her to raise Shs 400 million and send to 0780723011.
The number is registered in the name of Moses Namisi.

The letter was reportedly picked by one of Ms Nakayenze’s daughters on Thursday last week from her home in Butaleja Cell, Masaba Ward, Industrial Division in Mbale Municipality. Ms Nakayenze was not at home when the incident happened.

The letter currently in police custody at Mbale Central Police Station, reads: “Dear Honourable Connie, we have been sent to clear you within this week unless you raise four hundred million on this number, 0780723011, N.M.”

Ms Nakayenze said: “My daughter called me that she had picked a letter addressed to me. I immediately called my husband, who advised us to report the matter to police. We reported and I expect police to expedite investigations and arrest the culprits. My daughter already recorded a statement with police.”
The Elgon Region Police spokesperson, Mr Robert Tukei, said police were investigating the matter.

“Yes it is true some unidentified people dropped a life-threatening letter at Ms Nakayenze’s home and investigations into the matter are ongoing,” Ms Tukei said.
He said they had so far arrested one suspect to help with the ongoing investigations.

Mr Tukei, however, said preliminary investigations indicate that the unidentified suspects used a student of a prominent school in Mbale to drop the letter.
“The student has already recorded a statement as well,” he said.

Ms Nakayenze has been crying out over threats on her life, which she says started after she voted against the removal of the presidential age limit last year, contrary to her party position.

“I have brought these threats to police hoping that they can give me security but they have not bothered and yet my life is in danger. I have continued to receive threatening messages from unknown people,” she said.
Ms Nakayenze also accused police of reportedly withdrawing security from her home without her knowledge.

“They told me to apply officially, which I did but up to date, they have not deployed any police officer at my home,” she said.
The Mbale District Police Commander, Mr Fred Ahimbisibwe, said: “The issue of security at her home, I have talked to her and we are going to sort it out.”
