Seventeen people die in Mpigi accident

Wreckages of the taxi and a trailer at the accident scene.

Seventeen people have died in a Saturday accident at Kampiringisa in Mpigi District on  the Kampala Masaka highway.

Mpigi District police traffic officer Edith Nanteza confirmed the death toll indicating several people had been injured and the death toll could rise.

Speaking on phone,  Ms Nanteza said four vehicles including two commuter taxis, one trailer and a Toyota Noah   were  involved in the accident whose cause is yet to be established.

Investigations into the cause of the accident have started but Ms Nanteza said it could have been due to  reckless driving.

Details of the dead are still scanty but those injured have been transferred to Mpigi Hospital and Mulago hospital.

The Kampiringisa stretch on the Kampala-Masaka highway is among the parts of the road that have seen a rise in accidents ever since works on the 127 kilometre road were completed.

The accidents are blamed on the slippery nature of the road which becomes risky especially when it rains.
