Mufti Mubajje visits detained Muslim leaders at Luzira

KAMPALA- The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Ramadhan Mubajje on Friday visited the detained Muslim sheikhs at Luzira prison, a week after four rival Muslim factions endorsed him as their sole Mufti.

“We announced our unity and it seemed some people had not approved of it. Let this visit send a message of unity to all our brothers,” Sheikh Mubajje said during the visit to Luzira prison.

On Friday last week, the Mufti convened and presided over a reconciliation assembly for several rival Muslim factions. The factions included that of Old Kampala, Spidika in Kisenyi suburb, Nakasero and William Street-based Tabliqs and Clock Tower Mosque-based Tabliqs.

The Tabliq Amir (leader), Sheikh Yunus Kamoga, has been on remand for about three weeks now on charges of terrorism and murder. Sheikh Kamoga was arrested late last year and charged with two counts of murder and another of attempted murder and terrorism.

He was charged together with, Sheikh Murta Mudde Bukenya, Sheikh Fahad Kalungi, Mr Hakim Kinene Muswaswa, Mr Muzamilu Kasawuli, Mr Arafaat Serunjogi, Mr Badru Bukenya, Mr Alex Okot, Mr Joseph Olanya, Mr Amir Kinene, Ms Aisha Nakasibante and Mr Charles Okidi.

Other Sheikhs charged over the same offences include, Sheikh Ssiraje Kawooya, Sheikh Rashid Jjingo, Sheikh Abdu Salam Ssekayanja, Sheikh Twaha Ssekito and Sheikh Yusuf Kakande

The prosecution states that the accused, with others still at large, between December 2014 and January 5, 2015, at Kavule ward in Buyemba, Mayuge District, Bwebajja and Matugga in Wakiso District, with intent to intimidate the public or sections of the Muslim faith and for a political, religious, social or economic aim, involved themselves in attacks of Shiite and Tabliq Muslims, which resulted in murders.

They also contends that the suspects shot and killed Sheikh Mustafa Bahiiga at Bwebajja Mosque on Entebbe Road and the Shiite leader, Sheikh Abdul Qadr Muwaya, at his home in Mayuge District on different days in December last year.

They were also charged with attempted murder of Sheikh Jemba Haruna at his home in Wakiso district.
