MBARARA. The Mbarara District khadi, Sheikh Ramadhan Khamis, has been suspended along with two other officials over alleged fraudulent sale of Muslim land.
His suspension was announced by the chairman Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, Sheikh Adam Swalleh, in a press briefing at Mbarara Main Mosque on Saturday.
Sheikh Swalleh said the decision was taken last Friday following a meeting between the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council Mbarara executive and the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Ramadhan Mubajje, at Lake View Hotel in Mbarara District.

Sheikh Khamis, Mr Yahaya Semugenzi (secretary Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, Mbarara) and Mr Rashid Famau (treasurer) are accused of illegally selling Muslim land in Nyamitobora, Kakoba Division. The land was allegedly sold to a local investor at between Shs300-500 million.
“We met the Mufti and his team last Friday and a decision was reached to suspend the trio,” Mr Swalleh said.
The Mufti together with Abdallah Semambo (deputy Mufti), Dr Abdul Kadhir Balonde (chairman Uganda Muslim Supreme Council), Hajj Ramandhan Mugaru ( secretary general Uganda Muslim Supreme Council) and Sheikh Yahaya Kakungulu (director sharia) travelled to Mbarara last Friday to diffuse the tension over alleged sale of the land.

Sheikh Mubajje urged the rowdy Muslims to stay calm, saying the council was committed to fighting such illegal transactions.
Mr Abdallah Kivumbi, a leader of the Tabliq sect, said it’s a shame that the land of their forefathers preserved for more than 100 years is being sold off by selfish individuals.
Mr Semugenzi was arrested on Saturday morning by fellow Muslims and handed over to police. Sheikh Khamis and his co-accused refused to comment on the matter, saying their superiors who are investigating them were better placed to address the press.
