The fight against corruption in the country can only succeed if the church uses its strong foundation to take the lead against the vice, a State House official has said.

Lt Col Edith Nakalema, who heads the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, described corruption as a spiritual and moral vice that needs the church’s intervention.
“Uganda can only be corruption free if the church takes lead through prayer. It is through faith with action that we can denounce corruption in our country,” Lt Col Nakalema said.

She added: “I want to declare that the right army against corruption is the church. Our weapons are strong and I ask you (members) to pray without ceasing because confession is possession.”

Lt Col Nakelema was the guest speaker at the Prayer Conference 2019, hosted by the Christian Discipleship Ministries International (CDMI) at Kampala Parents School in Kampala at the weekend.

“In doing this service, resistance, persecution and prosecution will come but when we serve God and do well, He will fight for us. Let us approach the throne of grace; God will help us in time of need,” she said, while commending the media for naming and shaming the corrupt.

Lt Col Nakalema urged the congregation to serve faithfully in their different capacities, reasoning that it is the only source of promotion in all spheres of life.

“I served as an accountant, handling funds of soldiers for 13 years without misappropriating any coin and I was rewarded with promotions without undergoing any further training but because of exemplary performance,” she said.

Pastor Michael Kimuli, the CDMI head, welcomed Lt Col Nakalema’s call, saying it is timely for the church to join the fight against graft.

“Believers have a role to play to claim the gate of unity and love for the church and our country. The church also has a big role in the transformation of the nation and we believe in the righteous men and women of God in policy making,” Pastor Kimuli said.

He explained that the five-day conference that attracted hundreds of believers from across the world seeks to pray for the nation as it enters the year 2020, which would define the country’s political situations in 2021.
