KAMPALA. At least 11 students that have been unable to join university due to financial constraints, have been awarded scholarships by Hill City Foundation, a non-governmental organisation.

Mr Obi Imemba, the president of the foundation, said these scholarships aim at supporting the education of students, which come along with mentorship, self-discovery and economic empowerment programmes which will accelerate development.

“It is abuse of God’s expectation if we do not make an impact. This year in Uganda we are awarding scholarships to 11 students and every awardee has a mentor. We all need to help someone discover who they are and make them great,” Mr Imemba said on Saturday in Kampala.

The target
He added that next year they are targeting 50 students of which, 30 per cent of the beneficiaries will be from Karamoja.
“We have come to learn that Karamoja is a disadvantaged place in many ways and so we want to give priority to people from that region to help accelerate their development,” Mr Imemba added.

“We are going to sieve them out, we are already discussing with the State minister for Karamoja Affairs and we are going to work out a modality on how to sieve them out. A number of people in Karamoja have completed Senior Six but are unable to join university,” he added.

During the launch of the Hill City Foundation in Uganda, First Lady Janet Museveni said lack of the habit to share among Africans has left many of them poor.

“Africa is a blessed continent but we have never known that for God to bless his people he uses the people themselves. Africans, even those who are well off do not think of sharing what they have with those who do not have, and I think because of that, Africans have remained poor,” Ms Museveni said.
She called for entrepreneurial skills among the graduates.
