One dead, 12 injured in Nakasongola bus accident

  • In May 2018, 23 people died in an accident when a speeding bus belonging to Gaagaa Bus Company which was travelling from Lira District rammed into a tractor which was travelling towards Karuma in Kiryandongo District.

One person has been confirmed dead while 12 others are nursing serious injuries at Kiryandongo District hospital following Saturday morning bus accident along the Kampala-Gulu Highway.
According to eye witnesses, KK bus which was transporting passengers to Arua collided with HMK bus at about 1.30am near River Kafu in Nakasongola District.

The Officer in Charge of Nakasongola Police, ASP Martin Abigaba who was among the Police team that rushed to the scene attributed the cause to reckless driving.
He said preliminary investigations had revealed that the driver of the KK bus was driving recklessly.

According to him one person died on spot and the body was taken to Nakasongola hospital mortuary for postmortem.
“The patients were brought here when they were in a critical condition. Many of them have deep wounds while others had broken limbs. Our medical officials are attending to them. They are in a stable condition,” said Mr Sam Mutiti, the Kiryandongo senior Hospital Administrator.
The injured have been identified as Andrew Oketa, Flavia Tino, Richard Akwi, Deogratias Alinaitwe, Herbert Kabandize, Lilly Acan, Patrick Tamale, Martin Agaba, Francis Aloro, Henry Kutukeika, Jenifer Apyero, Monica Pita, Teddy Anabell and Pita’s one and-a-half-year-old daughter. The baby survived the accident unhurt, medical officials said.

Previous accidents
Early this month, six people died in an accident that occurred on the Kampala Gulu Highway when KK bus that was transporting passengers from Kampala to Gulu knocked a military truck that was heading in the same direction, Police said.
In May 2018, 23 people died in an accident when a speeding bus belonging to Gaagaa Bus Company which was travelling from Lira District rammed into a tractor which was travelling towards Karuma in Kiryandongo District.
The accident occurred at Nanda village, Nyamasa parish along the Gulu-Kampala Highway at about 10pm.

Last year, the Aruu county MP Odonga Otto sustained injuries in an accident along the Kampala-Gulu Highway when his car reportedly rammed into a trailer that had earlier overturned in the middle of the road at Katuugo trading centre in Nakasongola District.
In June 2018, a Fuso lorry Registration number UAS 994Y loaded with logs which was travelling from Lira District lost control and plunged into River Nile at Karuma Bridge via the railings.
