Six perish in Mayuge road accident

Six people died on spot and at least four others sustained injuries in a road accident that happened on Tuesday at Musita trading centre in Mayuge District along Iganga-Jinja highway.

Mr Ayub Musitafa one of the eye witnesses said the driver of Fuso Truck Reg No UBA 213N which was loaded with bags of sugar from Mayuge side lost control as he entered the Iganga-Jinja highway and rammed into a group of people and houses on the road side.

“There is a slopping lane as one enters the highway from Mayuge side, so the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a group of people and houses on the road side,” he said.

The Busoga East Police Spokesperson, Mr James Mubi, confirmed the incident saying the deceased included a man, two women and three children.

He identified the deceased as; Yeko Kyigenyi, the LC2 chairperson Mulingilire parish in Waitambogwe Sub County Mayuge district; Sunat Nakatuba, 30 and Hasifa Mutesi, 45, who are residents in Musita trading centre. The three children are Sadat Twaha, 3, Junior Ahamadha, 4, and one Najib.

Mr Mubi, identified the injured as; Salima Nabirye, 40, Fatuma Nakanyike, 35, Sayida Nangobi, 12, and Mesearch Walugambi, 10, who are residents of Musita.

“The vehicle had a problem in the braking system. Preliminary information indicates that the brake failure was indicated when the driver was still in Mayuge but he under rated this, leading him into problems. He is currently on the run,” he said.
