KUMI: Unidentified thugs have left most of the street lights in Kumi municipality in complete ruins, after uprooting the solar panels and their batteries.

Mr Richard Ochom, Kumi municipality mayor, said much of the town is now in darkness after the lighting system was uprooted in the last two weeks by unidentified thieves, whom he has tasked police to track.

He said the lights were installed at a cost sum of over Shs15m, to ease night movements and guarantee security in dark spots, but unfortunately they have been removed and now the municipal council has to re-budget for the lights.

“I and the council have struggled to ensure development of this municipality but the community has not realized our efforts,” Mr Ochom said.

She said the acts of thieves have affected service delivery, since they are now forced to readjust on the budget to get money for other street lights.
