Kampala. Altona have established themselves as the team to beat at Masters Swimming Championships.

In August last year, the Centenary Park-based outfit won the Cana Zone III Championships but there was a feeling they still had to prove their worth in the fraternity.
That opportunity presented itself on Saturday at the National Masters Gala where they had to beat a Formidables team that had 11 more entries than them. A better assembled Dolphins side than what competed in August 2018 also lay in wait too – with three more entries than Altona.

Coach Eric Kisero’s side clearly had their work cut out. A disqualification in the ladies’ 4*25m medley relay did not help matters but they soldiered on. The side relied on Hunter Kodet (160 points), Ronnie Alinda (148), Sandra Arinaitwe (174) and Makhtum Muziransa (117) to muster most of the points but Alex Ssegane (98), Albert Lumu (82) Peter Mugisha (76), Derrick Katungi (61), Richard Latigo (56), Andrew Mugasa (54), Eleth Nakazzi (49) did their part too.

Diana Basemera did only one event but it was arguably the one they needed most.
The new swimmer led Altona to second in the women’s 4*25m freestyle relay. Those points probably swung the gala Altona’s way as they finished with 1,261 points, just nine more than Formidables.

With the strong-willed Uganda Swimming Federation (USF) leaders; Dr. Donald Rukare, Peter Mugisha, Moses Mwase and Nana Nakiddu, Formidables certainly missed George William Mukasa and Ronald Daisuke Ssegwanyi.
