KAMPALA- Police FC boss Abdallah Mubiru begins his temporary spell as Cranes coach when part of the national soccer team starts preparing for the 2019 Cosafa today.

The often assured football teacher was selected for the role at the weekend but the news was confirmed by Uganda head coach Sebastien Desabre at a media question and answer session at Kabira Country Club yesterday morning.

Desabre also revealed Mubiru will be assisted by KCCA assistant manager Morley Byekwaso, goalkeeping coach Sadiq Wassa and Geoffrey Massa making his debut at this level as team manager.

“We sat and I gave the technical team direction and we settled with Mubiru. We all know him he is a good choice, and with Morley and Sadiq and Massa, they will do a good job,” said Desabre. “I’m happy Geoffrey Massa also joins the team and Fufa because he gives us a lot as a former national captain. As I concentrate on Afcon, Mubiru and his team will deal with Cosafa and after Afcon we focus on Chan.” Mubiru’s appointment into the role, apart from his known niche of enterprising play - a style associated with his Police side despite finishing 11th in the league – was made possible by Desabre’s need to focus on Afcon. And because Uganda embraced an invite from Cosafa, which runs from May 25 to June 8 in Durban, South Africa, they had to get a coach who had undivided attention.

A different squad for this tournament starts training at Lugogo today, a day after Uganda’s Afcon side kicked off their own preps yesterday.
