WhAT IS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PETROL AND DIESEL?

My Toyota Noah model 2003 has developed a big noise when driving, but disappears after long distance, say, after 10kms and more. I changed air cleaner and it reduced a little bit. What could be the problem. Thanks, Paul

Hello Paul, different engine noises can be caused by different faults and it is important to pay attention to them.

Clanking or grinding metallic noises in the engine suggest potential mechanical damage while a hissing sound may be due to leaking coolant. A whistling sound could be a leaking vacuum hose while a sharp high pitched screech would most likely be caused by a worn out drive or fan belt. The list goes on.

In your case, it would help to get a clearer description of this ‘big noise’ or to actually have this vehicle physically inspected by an experienced mechanic.
Using a clue you have given that this noise reduced when you replaced the air cleaner, I would like to suggest that a mechanic inspects the air intake tunnel after the air cleaner in case it is leaking air due to a loose or torn intake pipe.
Another potential cause of a deep muzzled voice would be a malfunctioning engine throttle body butterfly valve.
In case it gets stuck by gunk or soot, it will not close on time hence and this will alter the engine sound. Have the exhaust pipe inspected to check for a blocked catalytic coverter, which tends to have restricted exhaust smoke that causes that sort of noise.

Paul, can you explain the difference between petrol and diesel fuel?

Diesel and petrol are both fuels produced by heating crude oil in a fractional distillation tower system. Petrol is produced at lower temperatures while diesel is produced at higher temperatures. As such petrol combusts (burns) faster at lower temperatures while diesel burns at higher temperatures. In car engines petrol is ignited by spark while diesel is ignited by compression. Diesel engines have higher torque at lower revs while petrol engines have more power at higher engine revs.
Because of this, diesel fuel are a popular choice for heavy duty engines. And diesel fuel will give you more kilometres per litre used compared to petrol.
