Traditional dance competition Chibuku Sesetula kicked off yesterday at Nabweru playing ground. Spear headed by Sabmiller beer brand Chibuku, the event will see 50 traditional groups tussle it out for different prizes.

During the competitions, each group will perform a traditional folk dance from any region of their choice. One of the groups, Kika Dance Troupe, gave a sneak peak into their performance at the launch of the competition. They staged a traditional folk dance from Buganda and a traditional original composition. Ten different groups will be selected from the five divisions of Kampala.

The division competitions kicked off yesterday at Nabweeru football pitch for the Kawempe Division contestants.

Davidson Wadada, the brand manager of Chibuku beer, said Chibuku beer is sponsoring the competitions because it is “a traditional beer that celebrates the Ugandan tradition and cultural heritage”.
The overall winning group will walk home with Shs2 million and a set of traditional instruments. The 1st runner up will get Shs1 million and a set of dancing bikooyi, while the 2nd runner up will get Shs500,000 and a set of dancing bikooyi.

Other individual winners will include Best Male Dancer, Best Female Dancer, Best Male Soloist, Best Female Soloist, Best Dance and Best Song, all of which will get Shs100,000 each.
