What you need to know:

25 and counting: Monitor Publications and some partners are celebrating love this season by recognising couples who have been married for 25 years and more. Derrick Wandera spoke to four couples about how they have made it work in a world full of divorces and separations.

The Mugabis

Steven and Peace Mugabi celebrated their 25th marriage anniversary on December 28.
Daisy who nominated them says the couple always put up a united front. “They never fight in public. They do everything together and have always chosen to have one car because they are able to bond more that way.”
She adds: They pray together and when their children were in high school they attended all visitations together. They make love so much more beautiful.”
“Steven and I are very good friends regardless of what may happen. We pray and forgive one another and this is what has kept us going for the last 25 years of our marriage,” Peace says, adding that for the years they have been together, love and Godliness has been characteristic of their marriage.
The couple lives in Byeyogerere, Wakiso District and have three children together who they say they have taught to be apologetic, trustworthy and loving.
“We get trials and tribulations in our marriage but we have learnt to trust God in all that and pray for each other,” Peace says.

The Musokes

Stephen and Geraldine Musoke have been married for 34 years.
The couple says they are not about to let go thanks to the love and patience that are pivotal in their marriage. They have been blessed with six biological children and other dependants in what they call a marriage that you need to be in.
“We listen and care for each other and that is why we have managed to bring up our children in a Godly manner. With God at the centre of your relationship, nothing can ever go wrong,” Geraldine says.
Harriet Naggawa who nominated the couple talks of how she has walked together with the family and seen the love each has for the other. She says she is inspired and would like to see many of such families.

The Aseas

Apollo and Sarah Asea have stayed true to the decision they made to get married 29 years ago. Against all odds, the Aseas have faithfully monitored and raised three boys. “They are the best practice and inspiration for longevity in marriage and have lived to inspire many people around them,” says Pius Owule who nominated them.
“We have been together for 29 years and we will make 30 years as a happily married couple. For us, trusting God has made it look smoother than it may seem. We are a loving, friendly and God-fearing couple and to this we hope to stand for the rest of our lives,” says Apollo Asea.
The Aseas say God has fought most of their battles and they have withstood storms but most importantly they forgive one another in case of any wrongdoing.

The Kanonyas

David and Joyce Kanonya have been married for 38 years. In the 38 years of their marriage, the couple who are also marriage counsellors say moving and sharing their story to other people has been helpful in checking how their own union is working.
“We are happy because we keep talking to people about staying together in harmony and that has kept us living by example. We have loved each other from childhood and we pray that we continue that way,” Kanonya says.
The couple has seven children together whom they have raised in a God-loving, friendly and disciplined manner. The couple tells of God’s grace in their marriage as they have been able to educate all their children up to the last born who has also graduated.
