The essence of an interior designer

Interior design is creative art. Creative art involves understanding and articulating style; visual balance, contrast and form. It is about color and creating compliment or contrast.
It also includes lighting and creating an ideal ambience and bringing harmony to space. In a nut shell, Interior design is about interpreting the architectural drawings, surveying spaces and creatively working with existing structure to create required space.

Worthy of investment?
Interior designing helps you stop or avoid making expensive mistakes. For home owners, you may have noticed you need something changed a short while after entering your new homes. The curtains don’t match your walls anymore, your furniture does not fit your house no more or the carpet has to be removed and many other mistakes that get you looking out for something new and leading to unplanned expenditure. I believe this could be avoided or better options can be realized by hiring an interior designer.

Rich ideas resource
Interior designers are a source of very many great interior design ideas that might not have occurred to you before or never would. Ideas that seem small but give such a big impact. Interior designers also have a wide knowledge on what is trendy and what is not, what is durable/genuine and what is not, therefore hiring one saves you the headache of researching all this.

Commonly the men do the construction bit and you will hear them firmly say, “My wife will do the interior designing.’’ Well we need to know that not all wives are interior designers nor do they all love the designing and you cannot be an interior designer overnight, same way you cannot be a doctor or accountant overnight.
It is time people appreciate that interior designers are trained to execute interior design works and that these people really do make a difference because they know what they do.

The dangers of copy and paste
On one of my interior projects, I was contacted by a friend who wanted to remodel her daughter’s room, I did my research and presented my design plan for her baby’s room but on attempt to avoid my interior design charge, she decided to get her own cheaper painter, buy the paint herself and incorporate the design I had presented. Immediately after the work was done, she called me so distressed and cried that the color had not come out right and the walls looked horrible.

I set a date to visit the site and YES, she had all reasons to be distressed. The painter had not picked the exact color but picked a much rather deeper color. A best solution had to be got to uplift the room and this turned out more expensive than the original cost. However, you need to note designers can only do so much to control the damage.

So is engaging an interior designer money worthy? Well sure, I believe it saves you more expenditure, time and headaches and gets your work professionally executed.

“Just like you must engage your consortium of building professionals when you are starting the project- Architect, engineers- mechanical and electrical, project manager and quantity surveyor, you must engage an interior designer to actualize your envisioned interior spaces”, says Nyambura Mary, an interior designer.

“The hotels, apartments and offices you wow about out there have been given the looks by an interior designer. Your home can look just the same or exactly the way you’ve always dreamt,’’ she adds.
