Mugume always stood for the truth

It was gloom on November 19, in Ntoroko District when news of the murder of district NRM chairman Vincent Mugume started making rounds. Mugume, 47, was born to Augustine Rwecungura and Seforoza Kabahigi in Mwenge, currently Kyenjojo District.

In 1980 they migrated to Bundibugyo District before Ntoroko District was carved out of it. Mugume met his death while on his way to Kanara Town Council on Tuesday November 19, it is said unknown assailants on a boda boda trailed and hacked him in Semliki Game Reserve.

The sad news about his death left the residents of his village, Lwenyange A in Kanara Town Council, Ntoroko District in shock.
Mugume, who was serving as Ntoroko District NRM chairman, was well known as man that loved equity within the NRM party.

Sad Kisembo the brother said Mugume was a man who liked reconciliation and truth in his life.
“We shall never get another man like him in our clan of Babito because all our clan members could come to his home seeking advice and reconciliation. He was the head of our family and we could run to him in case of any problem,” Kisembo said.

Mugume left 14 children and two widows, Rose Kasiime and Happy Margret.
Margret described her late husband as a man who was not corrupt.
His son Joshua Twesige said their father was a mentor, a man with open mind and a leader who loved his family and people.

“Our father was a strong man that liked education. What I suspect that he was murdered because he was dedicated to the truth,” Twesige said.
Mugume was buried on Thursday September 21 in Karugutu town council where he had another family.

Education background
Being the first born in the family of late Augustine Rwecungura, late Mugume completed Primary Seven at Karugutu Primary School in 1985 and joined Senior One in Kibiito Secondary School in 1986 then Kabarole District now Bunyangabu district.
After the death of his father in 1987 while in Senior Two, Mugume dropped out of school because he could not afford school fees.

He engaged in several business ventures, starting with fishing on Lake Albert at Kanara Landing Site in Ntoroko District and he later opened up a shop. Mugume did not stop there he started bidding for district tenders which earned him money.
By the time of his death, Mugume was great businessman in Ntoroko District with many commercial buildings.

Political career
In 2000 Mugume joined politics where he was elected chairperson of Kanara Parish Kanara Sub-County. After the creation of Ntoroko District in 2010 from Bundibugyo District, Kanara Sub-County become a town council in 2011 he became councilor for Kanara Town Council where he elected as chairperson for production and in 2016.

He became district councillor for Kanara town council.
In 2017 he was elected as district NRM vice chairman and in 2018 he became NRM district chairman after district NRM chairman, Mr Misach Kawamara, was appointed RDC of Kyegegwa district.

Burial
Being district NRM chairman, his burial attracted many political actors and other members from NRM secretariat. President Museveni gave Shs 10 million as condolence to the deceased family and Shs 5 million to the family of the boda boda rider who was murdered with Mugume.

What other people say
Mr James Tweheyo, the NRM CEC member who represented President Museveni, described the late Mugume as man was a good at mobilizing people to love and vote for NRM party.
Mr Elia Akugizibwe a friend said late Mugume was a good businessman who liked to inspire others and also to help others in case of need.

The Ntoroko Woman Member of Parliament, Anna Tumwine said they have lost a hard working man in the NRM party who was good in mobilisation of party members.
“He was great to us, as district we have made a big loss and he was a hard working man who loved the NRM party. We want the government to intervene to ensure that they give us security on Karugutu-Kanara road” Ms Tumwine said.

Mr Misach Kawamara the RDC Kyegegwa said late Mugume was a hard working man by the time of death.
“It’s very sad that he was brutally murdered by criminals at the time when he is still needed by his family, Kanara community, Ntoroko District and NRM fraternity” Mr Misach Kawamara said.
