JINJA- Police in Jinja District have arrested more than 100 street children following an attack on a police officer attached to Jinja Central Police Station.

The officer, who is nursing injuries at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, was stabbed by suspected knife-wielding street children at the weekend.
Mr Geoffrey Emojong, according to the Jinja District police commander, Mr Felix Mugizi, is nursing multiple wounds but is steadily improving.

“Those above 18 years will be arraigned before the court while those below 18 years will be taken to the national reformatory school in Kampiringisa.

The operation was conducted in response to the attack, which police said was a hallmark of the increasing insecurity in the area.

“We cannot allow this kind of violence on the streets. We shall hunt them one by one,” Mr Mugizi told Daily Monitor on Monday.

Mr Mugizi also blamed the rising cases of violence associated with street children on the failure, non-government organisations and orphanages that fail to accommodate those under their care and release then to the streets at night.
“Orphanages should be taking care of street children and not release then during the night to cause chaos. If they don’t do that I am going to arrest the managers for failure to play their role,” he said.
