Trained. The inmates were trained under the Prison Education Programme, a UN recommended programme for prisoners.

Kampala. A total of 280 inmates have been awarded certificates in development and rehabilitation studies at Luzira Maximum Security Prison, a move prison authorities said would help reduce repeat offenders.
The inmates from Maximum Security Prison, Murchison Bay and Luzira Women completed training conducted by the Prison Education Programme and Muteesa I Royal University.
The training comprised academic orientation, entrepreneurship, correction theory, forgiveness and healing, creative writing and introduction to modern dance.

Mr Gilbert Niwamanya, the head teacher of Luzira Inmates Schools, said the training which is in line with UN standard, will help inmates in their ‘Ordinary Level’ and ‘Advanced Level’ English Language and General Paper study.
Prison Education Programme Uganda coordinator Anatoli Biryomumaisho, said the training would help inmates re-invent themselves as they serve their punishments.
“Conditions change and many of the inmates are first offenders so they should not be treated as criminals,” said Mr Biryomumaisho asking inmates to make value of the skills to prepare for their lives after prisons.
