8 UPDF soldiers injured in accident

Ntoroko.

Eight UPDF soldiers have been injured in an accident during their border operations in Ntoroko district.

The Uganda/DRC army border operations spokesman Maj Ronald Kakurungu said, "On Tuesday, eight UPDF soldiers, while on routine border operations were injured when a military vehicle they were moving in got involved in an accident at Kakara in Ntoroko district."

He said the injured were immediately evacuated to Fort Portal Referral Hospital for emergency treatment where they were thereafter admitted.

On Friday, six of them were referred to General Military Hospital at Bombo for more specialised treatment. The UPDF using a military chopper airlifted them from Fort Portal to Bombo.

Kakurungu said that all the injured are out of danger “and we salute the management and technical teams of Fort Portal Hospital for their tireless efforts in stablising them and saving their lives."

UPDF has instituted an investigation into the cause of the accident, he said.

The UPDF started operations in Kasese, Bundibugyo and Ntoroko districts in Western Uganda a week before Christmas in the wake of fresh threats of DRC based Ugandan rebels of Allied Democratic Force (ADF) to attack the country.

On December 23, UPDF said they attacked bases of ADF inside DRC using missiles and airstrikes killing over 100   rebels.

Since then there has been an influx of Congolese refugees into Uganda districts of Hoima and Kasese and a few in Bundibugyo fleeing fighting in DRC.

Reports say there are tribal attacks inside DRC.
