Ex-Tabliq leader Sheikh Mwanje released on bail

KAMPALA- Former leader of the Tabliq Muslims Sheikh Yahaya Ramathan Mwanje will celebrate Idd with his family after spending close to three years on remand on charges of murdering Maj Mohammad Kiggundu and his bodyguard.
Charged jointly with three other suspects, Sheikh Mwanje, has been in detention since 2016.
The International Crimes Division of the High Court granted Sheikh Mwanje a non-cash bail of Shs20m and each of his four sureties was bonded Shs10m.
Justice Duncan Gaswaga also ordered the Muslim cleric to deposit his passport in court and always report to the registrar every second Tuesday of the month.
The court further ordered Sheikh Mwanje to obey the security personnel once approached and not to engage in inflammatory preaching.
Sheikh Mwanje is represented by Muwema and Company Advocates.
He is jointly charged with Sheikh Muhammad Buyondo alias, Matiya and Abdul Wahab Sendegeya both boda boda riders in Kyengera and Musa Sekandi, alias Masanafu.
They were committed to the High Court for trial in May 2017 after the prosecution submitted that investigations into the murder were complete.
It is alleged that the accused murdered Kiggundu, a fellow sheikh and a Major in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, together with his bodyguard Pte Stephen Mukasa, on November 26 2016 at Masanafu Trading Centre in Lubaga Division.
They are also facing charges of aiding and abetting terrorism and belonging to a terrorist group (ADF) between 2010 and 2017.
