Health worker arrested for soliciting Shs100,000 bribe from expectant mother

A health worker attached to Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital has been arrested for allegedly soliciting Shs100,000 bribe from an expectant  mother.

The Rwenzori West regional spokesperson, Ms Lydia Tumushabe said that police on Thursday arrested the nursing assistant working with Baylor Uganda attached to Fort Portal hospital after receiving reports that she had extorted Shs100,000 from a woman in labour.

She said that Ms Livia Kesande, 22, of Kitoro village, Kasenda Sub County in Kabarole District who had been in labour for about four days was on Wednesday recommended to undergo cesarean section, but the suspect demanded for money “on pretense that he wanted to buy Jik and other equipment to use in the theater.”

“The relatives to Ms Kasande did not have the Shs100,000 so they started borrowing to raise the money that was paid to him. A concerned person decided to call police which came and arrested the suspect and on search, the exhibit of Shs75,000 was recovered,” Ms Tumushabe.

“The husband of the expectant mother called me and I called the Deputy RDC Mr Festus Bandeeba who photocopied the money, gave it to CIDs and arrested the health worker on receiving it,” he said.

The suspect is currently detained at Fort Portal central police station as investigations continue.
