Kabaka Mutebi gives a car to man who helped Muteesa flee to exile

Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga yesterday handed over a car to Mr Sebastian Kitayimbwa, the man who helped Kabaka Muteesa flee to exile, in 1966.

This was during an official visit Mayiga paid to Kitayimbwa at his home in Ssembabule. He thanked Kitayimbwa for being brave and firm, saying what he did was a sign of love for Buganda.

“We have seen many people turning against Buganda, for petty rewards. Kitayimbwa could have reported Kabaka Muteesa and gotten the Shs250,000 which Obote had pledged to offer to anyone who had seen Muteesa,” Mr Mayiga said.
Mr Mayiga handed over a Toyota Noah to Mr Kitayimbwa, which he said was a gift from the Kabaka as a way appreciating him.

Kitayimbwa, who looked amused about both the gift and the Katikiro’s special visit, said he was happy the Kabaka has appreciated him while still he is still alive.

“I want to thank the Kabaka for recognising my service, while I am still alive, this has now created a new chapter between me and Buganda,” Mr Kitayimbwa said.

He cautioned the youth against being greedy for money, saying he was earning a salary of Shs1,500 but resisted the Shs250,000 reward which Obote had pledged to pay to anyone who had information about Kabaka Muteesa.

During his visit to the area, Mayiga also condemned the increasing cases of early and forced marriages among the girls in Sembabule, saying he has received reports from Buganda chiefs in Sembabule, that many girls are married off before or after completing primary seven.

“Marriage is only good for those who are ready for it, but not young girls who are supposed to be in school. It is bad that this practise is pronounced in Sembabule,”
the Katikiro said, adding that when a girl is educated, chances are even she will marry a man of a better calibre.
