KCCA appoints committee to clean up city transport mess

Kampala- Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has appointed an interim committee in a bid to resolve grievances of taxi drivers and clean up the mess that has for long dogged the city’s transport industry.
“This is to inform you that you have been appointed on a joint interim committee whose core function is to assist KCCA in organising elections in the taxi operators’ committee, which is scheduled for September,” reads the appointment letter circulated to the 20 members that will constitute the committee.
The committee will, according to the letter, appoint its chairperson and a secretary, whose duties will be to inform KCCA executive director Jennifer Musisi and update taxi operators on any development in the industry.
Asked whether KCCA will foot the operational cost of the committee, the authority’s public relations officer, Mr Peter Kaujju, said they would look into it.
“They [Taxi Parks/Stages Coordinating Committee] have been helping our enforcement team, but from now onwards, KCCA and police will take over the enforcement,’ Mr Kaujju said in a telephone interview on Saturday.
The appointment follows last Monday’s sit-down strike staged by city transporters, who accused KCCA’s assisting committee, Tapscom, of torture and extortion of money.
Members include Ssalongo Lukwago, Abbey Lwanga, Yasin Ssematimba, Ssakasi Mayambala and Christopher Kanyike. Others are Lawrence Mutebi, Grace Luyera, Kalidi Bbale, Jon Kabanda, Anatoli Nsereko, Stephen Kidde, Faisal Lule, Mustapha Mayambala, Mahmoud Nsubuga and William Katumba, among others.
