Police arrest over 300 thugs in Kisenyi operations

- The operations that started at 10am involving Division Police Commanders (DPCs) and Officers in Charge (OCs) saw suspected thugs apprehended in areas of Katwe, Kisenyi, Nakivubo, Makerere Kikoni, Bwaise and Ndeeba.
- In the operations, several rudimentary weapons suspected to have been used by these thugs in burglary were recovered, some with blood stains. The recovered weapons included; machetes, knives, woods and stones among others.
KAMPALA. Over 300 suspected criminals were on Monday arrested in Police operations in Kisenyi, a Kampala suburb.
Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said the operations were conducted following consistent public outcry over criminals terrorising traders and pedestrians in Kisenyi corridors.
Mr Owoyesigyire said the suspects armed with rudimentary weapons and drugs were found hiding in corridors, makeshift and dilapidated structures.
“We found many of them in possession of drugs and suspected stolen items ranging from electronics and other stuff. We conducted the operations to ensure we reduce criminals who have become rampant in the city,” he said.
The suspects majorly youths aged between 17 and 30 are being detained at Kampala Central Police Station (CPS) and Old Kampala Police Station.
Mr Owoyesigyire said police had arrested quite a big number but after screening they remained with 333 who will be arraigned in courts of law this week.
“The 333 we have now are the ones who remained after we screened them. We are going to charge them with being in possession of suspected stolen items, drugs like narcotics and theft,” he said.
He said that the operations won’t stop until the city is free from criminals victimising locals doing their businesses. Traders told police that criminals often break into their shops, snatch wallets of their customers among other items.
Last month, police arrested 400 suspected criminals of which 300 were arraigned in Mengo and Buganda Road magistrate courts. The suspected criminals were arrested in operations conducted in seven Kampala policing divisions.
