Police detain man filmed battering his wife in Kampala

Police Tuesday detained a man who was secretly filmed beating his wife in Mutundwe Hill, Kigaga Zone in Kampala.

A video circulated on social media from early this week shows the suspect identified as Benson Okongo ruthlessly battering a woman while he also disrobed her blouse to near nakedness.

Helplessly watching, the victim- Ms Sauda Nagawa, 36, is further dragged on the ground by her blouse and pushed to the ground where she’s on several times hit with debris amidst blows and kicks to a point of retreat before her retaliation is thwarted by the man.    

‘‘This incident happened on August 14 from which, the local authorities in the area arrested the suspect and took him to Natete Police station,’’ the law enforcement agency disclosed.

Police say Okongo who is currently held at the station is now accused of causing ‘‘grievous bodily harm and domestic violence.’’

‘‘The file has since been forwarded to the Resident State Attorney (RSA) on allegations of grievous bodily harm. He will be subsequently arraigned in courts of law,’’ Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed.

In Uganda, cases of domestic violence significantly picked and peaked with over 1,500 cases recorded across the country during the Covid-19 era.  

‘‘We would like to inform the victims to report as soon as possible to our police station for proper case handling,’’ ASP Owoyesigyire urged.
