Two students of Prince Kalema Secondary School and St Joseph SS Butenga, drowned while attending their schools’ leavers’ party at Nabugabo beach, Masaka District on Saturday.

Ronald Kyazze, 16, a senior three student at Prince Kalema Secondary School, Mpugwe, was identified after his body resurfaced. However the other student’s body is still missing.

According to the Regional Police spokesperson Mr Idi Ibin Ssenkumbi, police is still investigating circumstances that led to the death of the students and have arrested the chairman of Nabugabo landing site to aid in the investigations.

“We have learnt that the two schools came for a leaver’s party, five students went to swim but only three returned,” he said.

A watchman at the beach told Daily Monitor that he heard teachers threatening to leave students at the beach claiming they were old enough to take themselves back home.

"As I was opening the gate, I heard a female teacher speaking but I was surprised to see them back early on Sunday asking whether we had seen their student around the beach," he said.

Kyazze’s body is currently at Masaka regional referral hospital for post mortem.
