ENTEBBE- UPDF soldiers who were deployed to stop illegal fishing practices on Lake Victoria have shot and injured a fisherman in Bufumira Sub-county in  Kalangala District.

The soldiers shot Mr Sam Kayanzi,  on Thursday night. Mr Kayanzi operates at Kigungu Landing Site in Entebbe Municipality.

He was reportedly suspected of hidding immature fish in his boat.

Mr Muhammad Kyakuwa, an eye witness said they were shocked when Mr Kayanzi was shot yet he had no immature fish.

He, however,  said Mr Kayanzi tried to flee when he saw soldiers approaching his boat.

“It seems they had information about someone having immature fish and they mistook me for that person,” Mr Kayanzi, who is receiving treatment at Entebbe Referral Hospital, said.

Lt Col James Nuwagaba, the commandant of the Fisheries Protection Unit told Daily Monitor that he wasn't aware of any shooting.
