NRM yet to set new date for party primaries

Kampala.

The NRM Secretariat’s decision to indefinitely postpone the party primaries is causing anxiety among some party members.
Those who seek to be party’s parliamentary or mayoral flag bearers see it as a waste of money since it stretches their campaigns past the scheduled date.

The party’s EC last week postponed primaries indefinitely.
Dr Tanga Odoi, the NRM EC chairman, in a press statement, cited “unforeseen circumstances”.

Ms Jane Alisemera, one of the [NRM EC’s] three commissioners, later told this newspaper the party wants to “ensure the ballot papers cannot be copied and printed at Nasser Road”.

Mr Kenneth Omona, the NRM deputy treasurer, said: “There are things the electoral commission has to sort out for us to have free and fair primaries.”

Our calls to EC boss Odoi went unanswered while his deputy John Kigyagi’s known telephone number was switched off.
A source in the NRM that preferred anonymity told the Daily Monitor a new roadmap would be ready by Wednesday.

Financial constraints
This leaves aspirants for parliamentary and mayoral seats strained as they have to dig deeper into their pockets to facilitate their prolonged campaigns.
