Nanyondo warms up for Glasgow

What you need to know:

Nanyondo faces tougher opposition in runners like World champ Kenyan Eunice Sum, US champ Wilson Ajee, Yekaterina Poistogova and American Laura Roesler at the 10th IAAF Diamond League Meet in Monaco.

KAMPALA- To many pundits and her coach Raphael Kasaija, Winnie Nanyondo is in her best form ever in the 800m race just before the Commonwealth Games in Glagsow.

But despite breaking a two-minute barrier in Hengelo and later setting a new personal best (PB) of 1:59.47 in Ostrava within a space of nine days last month, the diminutive middle-distance runner is not yet satisfied with her performance.

And the 20-year-old will seek perfection with her spikes when she lines up alongside a strong field of 10 runners for the two-lap race at the tenth IAAF Diamond League Meet at the Stade Louis II in French city of Monaco this evening.

“I did well in Ostrava but there is room for improvement before Glasgow,” Nanyondo told Daily Monitor before she left the country early this week.

In the Czech city, Nanyondo recorded a surprise maiden international win at the IAAF Golden Spike Meet after beating crowded 14-woman field to set the fifth world lead time, a feat that earned her June’s Uspa monthly gong.

“I watched the video of that memorable victory together with my coach and realised that I need to improve on my final 150m,” she said.

“In comparison with the Hengelo (1:59.39) video, I was faster in the last segment which means I can concentrate further and be able to lower my PB.”

Perhaps, gaining speed was Nanyondo’s motive when she posted an impressive 53.72 to sign off with a surprise 400m victory at the National Track & Field Championships last Saturday.
