Uganda's 19-year-old Kiplimo secures World Half Marathon glory

Ugandan long distance runner Jacob Kiplimo, 19, has won the men's race at the World Half Marathon Championships in a record time of 58:49.

Not even the Coronavirus pandemic could stop the youngster as World record breaker, Joshua Cheptegei finished in fourth position with record time of 59:21. This was Cheptegi's first attempt at marathon.

Following Jacob’s win and Cheptegei’s performance, President Museveni and the First Lady who doubles as the sports minister took to twitter to congratulate the duo for representing their country.

"Congratulations to you Jacob Kiplimo on winning Gold for Uganda at the World Half Marathon championship. I also congratulate Joshua Cheptegei and the rest of the team; the Ugandan Flag has been raised so high," Mr Museveni tweeted.


However, Kenya's Kibiwott Kandie takes home silver in 58:54 with bronze going to Ethiopia's Amedework Walelegn in 59:08.

"Congratulations Jacob Kiplimo upon winning the #WorldHalfMarathon in 58:49 minutes. Congratulations Joshua Cheptegei too upon finishing in fourth place! What a wonderful performance for the Ugandan team. You have made us proud. Keep it up and God bless you," Ms Museveni tweeted.
