Nemostars finish eighth at Africa meet

Leader Of The Pack. George Aporu

All the optimism and promise of Nemostars’ surge at the Africa Club Volleyball Championship was deflated on Monday as the Ugandan side finished eighth in Tunisia.

While the position is a testament of the team’s defiance amid financial strife, it’s a drop from the sixth position they managed two years ago in Egypt.

Last Wednesday, Nemostars were bouncing after making the quarterfinals for a second straight tournament and had designs of making the final four for the first time. Their 10 players, two less than quota, lost 3-0 to Libya’s Swehly on Friday. That result relegated them to a fight for positions six to eight. On Sunday, Nemo, who travelled without a coach for Africa’s premier club event, were beaten by Kenya Ports Authority 3-0.

Led by captain George Aporu, also acting as coach and leader of delegation, Nemo lost the game 25-18, 26-24, 25-19.

“I still believe we are not yet where we should be. We can do better and this will happen sooner than we can imagine but we all have to believe and work towards it,” Aporu said.

Now fighting for seventh, another Kenyan side General Service Unit (GSU) put Nemo out of their rather unfulfilling 12 days with 25-14, 25-19 and 25-19 set scores for a 3-0 defeat.
