What you need to know:

  • Masaba had an opportunity to join Arua’s newly formed club, Arua Hill FC after leaving Onduparaka but declined the opportunity for fear of stoking fires of enmity between these West Nile clubs.

URA have appointed former captain Simeon Masaba to their senior team coaching staff. Former URA skipper also known as Massa made a quick U-turn to Wakiso Giants where he had earlier been announced in a similar capacity.

Masaba had an opportunity to join Arua’s newly formed club, Arua Hill FC after leaving Onduparaka but declined the opportunity for fear of stoking fires of enmity between these West Nile clubs.

The tax collectors are understood to have concluded talks with Masaba to join Hamza Lutalo and Augustine Nsumba at the club as assistants.
Masaba, who retired at the end of the 2015/16 season, was first drafted in the coaching team at URA with Livingstone Mbabazi before the pair switched to Onduparaka.

Always on the move
In August, he had joined newly promoted army side UPDF but changed his mind soon after Steven Bogere was replaced with Kefa Kisala. Then Douglas Bamweyana handpicked him at Wakiso Giants last month.

“It is an exciting opportunity to work with the team that gave me an opportunity to excel as a coach,” said Masaba who was a key pillar at URA between 2010 and 2016.

The URA move seemed more appealing to Masaba especially after the club recruited exciting talent including goalkeeper Hannington Sebwalunyo, Jackson Nunda, Davis Ssali and Arafat Galiwango in an attempt to challenge for the league title. URA were last crowned champions at the end of the 2011 season while winning the Uganda Cup twice (2012 and 2014).

Masaba, who is greatly admired by new club executive Henry Mayeku, is expected to begin work immediately.
Ssimbwa said: “I am pleased to welcome Masaba as we build a strong team for the new season. He has a tremendous affinity with this team and the fans appreciate just how much he has accomplished as a player at the club,” Ssimbwa added.
