CHANGING TRENDS. Waxing is not just for the ladies; hair removal for men is growing in popularity as Carol Nambowa finds out.

Hair grows all over the body. However, when it comes to getting rid of body hair, hair is removed from areas like the head, chin, nose, ears, underarm and pubic area. Few men opt for hair removal even on the chest and legs.

Emma Mugabi, a hair dresser and spa attendant at Pamper Zone Health and Beauty Spa, Kamwokya guides men through the different hair removal trends every Ugandan man should try out.

Waxing
“Few men in Uganda know about waxing,” says Mugabi. Waxing involves applying wax then using a strip of cloth with a sticky substance to the skin which when swiftly removed uproots hair from the root leaving a smooth skin

Although painful, waxing is one of the most effective hair removal methods since it removes hair by the roots and would require one more than a week until the next waxing period. Men have lower levels of pain tolerance compared to women, thus a few men opt for waxing.

Since waxing is expensive and requires the help of another person, most men go for shaving. Sometimes waxing is done on the head to have a smooth and completely bald head.

Shaving with a machine
Shaving is done either with a machine or a razor. Shaving with a machine is usually done in the salon or spa and ranges from Shs 5,000 to Shs 10,000.

To prevent itchy rash that follows a shave, Mugabi says instruments used need to be sterilised and cleaned from one customer to another. He states the rash is as a result of bacteria being transferred from one person to another and irritation from dry skin.

After shaving, it is best to clean the shaved area with a warm towel that contains sanitiser, after-shave containing anti-bacterial and oil leaves the skin soft and clean. You do not need to use the aftershave again.

It is best to shave after a week and not every after two or three days. After shaving with the machine, you can use a smoother which like tweezers pulls the remaining hair by the roots and leaves the skin smooth.

Using a razor
Before shaving with a razor, shaving foam is applied on the skin for three minutes to soften the skin then shave. Like shaving with the machine, one needs to pass a warm towel with sanitiser then apply after shave. The advantage of shaving with a razor has over the machine is that it leaves the skin smooth.

Tweezing
Some men with in hair growth require a tweezing method to be used to strand of a hair or beard at a time by the root. Men whose beards require tweezing usually develop pimple-like bumps on the chin, neck area with the hair curling in the skin causing the bumps that itch even before shaving. Since it takes longer to finish a beard while tweezing, it costs about Shs 20,000.

Trimming
Some men prefer using a pair of scissors because they level, scissors are also used to trim hair in the ear when it is too long. Mugabi notes, “Most men love hair in the ear because it acts as an air filter.”

note
Shaving every after two or three days affects the skin and can make the skin rough and result in skin cancer.
