Media Council suspends ‘State of the Nation’ play

Mr John Segawa, the director and playwright, says the suspension is ill-timed because the Media Council received the play scripts and gave them a go ahead.

The Uganda Media Council yesterday ordered a group of Ugandan actors to stop staging a play titled State of the Nation.

“Pending revival by the council, we direct that you suspend staging the play until conclusion of the review,” reads part of the letter signed by Mr Pius Mwinganisa, the secretary to the media council.

State of the Nation has been showing at National Theatre for one month. According to Mr John Segawa, the writer and director of the play, the suspension is unfair and ill-timed because the Media Council received the play scripts and gave them a go ahead.

“The council has waited for when the play is already showing and they have sent a letter suspending it,”Mr Segawa said. He added: “You do not just suspend a play.

We incur several costs in planning for these plays. They had time to tell us before we started showing not now when we have already paid for even advertisement and venues.” He said the actors were consulting with their lawyers before deciding on the way forward.
