KAMPALA-President Museveni has tasked the Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, to “bring to a logical conclusion” investigations into the murder of Moses Okello in March 2015 in Kalaki Village, Serere District.

The President’s principal private secretary, Ms Molly Kamukama, in a December 4 letter to Gen Kayhiura said the deceased’s father, Mr Nicholas Enyopu, petitioned the President to render justice to his family.

Okello’s murder was one of the five-part investigative series documenting the spate of killings in Teso Sub-region that this newspaper published early last year.
The series documented how hitmen invaded different villages, leaving behind dead bodies and torture victims.

The alleged masterminds were reported to be a group of powerful senior security officials, politicians and business people.

In the Okello murder case, Ms Kamukama said Mr Enyopu in the earlier May 29, 2017 petition had accused the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr Phillip Acaye, of his son’s murder.

“The purpose of this communication, therefore, is to request that this matter is handled to its logical conclusion. A report to the ...President is awaited,” Ms Kamukama’s correspondence, also copied to Internal Affairs minister Gen Jeje Odongo, reads in part.

One month later, it is not yet clear whether Gen Kayhura has since forwarded any report of investigations about the murders to the President.

However, police sources told Daily Monitor that “there has been progress in the Okello murder case”.

The deputy police spokesperson, Ms Polly Namaye, said seven suspects from police, UPDF and district intelligence, who were involved in the operation during which Okello was killed, have since been arrested, charged and are currently committed to Luzira prison on remand.

“The Director of Public Prosecutions is also investigating all possible links to ACP Acaye,” she said.
Mr Eponyu told Daily Monitor yesterday that he was “satisfied” with the progress made following the arrests.
