LUWEERO. Police in Luweero District are investigating the murder of a farm employee alleged to have been tortured to death by a mob linked to a top city lawyer on Sunday.

The Savana Regional Police Spokesperson, Mr Paul Kangave confirmed the death of 28-year-old James Kalemera who is said to have been killed on the instructions of the city lawyer over suspicions that he had stolen his cows from the farm.

“We are investigating circumstances under which Kalemera, a labourer at a farm owned by a top city lawyer was killed by a mob on Sunday at Kayonza village in Butuntumula Sub County, Luweero District. The victim was allegedly beaten using clubs and burning plastics as a way of trying to get information about the whereabouts of cows that disappeared from the farm in September. Nobody has a right to kill. The act which was committed is unfortunate yet there are allegations that the owner of the farm who we are investigating ordered the torture of the victim till he breathed his last in the presence of his wife who also tried to plead for the safety of the husband,” Kangave told the Daily Monitor in an interview on Monday.

Mr Kangave said they already have one suspect in custody as investigations into the matter continue.

The deceased’s wife Ms Helen Kaitesi, 24, told this reporter that her husband pleaded for mercy and asked the lawyer to take him to Police if he suspected him to have stolen his cows, in vain.

“I personally pleaded with the lawyer to take my husband to police while four men were on my husband beating him, but kept a deaf ear. The disappeared after they realised that my husband had become unconscious at around 5.00pm, a few minutes before he breathed his last,” she said.
