NIC players dominate She Cranes squad

Netball. 30 players were summoned to start training with She Cranes at Namboole yesterday but only 12 will make the trip to Australia for the World Cup due August 7-16 next year

KAMPALA.
National Insurance Corporation (NIC) players form the bulk of the senior women’s national team, the She Cranes, summoned for next year’s World Cup.

The league champions have 12 players in the squad of 30, which started training at Namboole yesterday. Uganda Police have six while Prisons contributed four players to the team. Only 12 players will make the trip to Sydney, Australia.

“We don’t have much time left to play the World Cup,” She Cranes coach Fred Mugerwa said after announcing the squad.

“We have to start early preparations. We need to train adequately,” added Mugerwa.

Angella Namirembe and Betty Kiiza got their first call-ups to the senior team having performed excellently at the World Youth Netball Championship held in Botswana in May.

Captain Peace Proscovia will be out of training for two months as she recovers from knee injuries.
The Netball World Cup will feature 16 teams including New Zealand, hosts Australia, South Africa, Malawi, Zambia, Jamaica, Fiji, Wales, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Scotland, Samoa, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados.
Uganda will be competing at the World Cup for the first time since 1979.
