Half-back Ofoyrwoth gets golden chance to right wrongs

Kampala. Half-back Aaron Ofoyrwoth will never forget this year’s Elgon Cup match against Kenya at Legends. A few minutes after making his debut off the bench, Ofoyrwoth received a yellow card. By the time he came back, Kenya Simbas were closing in on a hard-fought 23-18 victory.
For his ‘sins’, coaches John Duncan and Robert Seguya dropped him from the team that travelled to Nairobi and Dakar, Senegal.
However, this Saturday, the youngster (pic right) has a shot at redemption when he lines up against Tunisia in the Africa Gold Cup match.
“From childhood, I have always believed that you should start the game if you are making your debut. Or at least be given many minutes. In my case, there was a lot going on in my mind. I thought I was going to come on just after halftime.
“But when the game entered the latter stages, I got nervous and by the time I came on, there were butterflies in my tummy. That disorganized me; I ended up committing errors and got sinbinned,” Ofoyrwoth opens up.
He is desperate to make amends against the North Africans. “Before dropping me, coach (Duncan) convinced me that I still had a chance. I kept working hard and I’m happy my efforts have been rewarded. Life doesn’t give many chances, so I’m very ready to utilize this,” he added.
The Hima Cement Heathens player is well aware of the competition for places. Ivan Kirabo and Kevin Makmot are ahead of him in the pecking order, but Ofoyrwoth is unshaken, saying: “It (competition) brings the best out of us. The most important thing is to utilize the chances that come each other’s way. Show the coaches that you are able and leave the rest to them.”
