KCCA’s crowning moment

What you need to know:

  • Total dominance. Kasasiro Boys underline superiority with fifth crown in seven years.

KCCA will today be crowned StarTimes Uganda Premier League champions for a fifth time in the last seven seasons as the 2018/2019 season draws to a close.

Few will begrudge them for the achievement even in a season when they have not been at their scintillating best.
Led by Timothy Awany, arguably the league’s best player this season, the Yellow Boys have shown more consistency than their rivals.

KCCA for instance won five and drew four of their 10 games between February 09 and April 20 in their two-horse race with Vipers. Their rivals, meanwhile won three, drew four and lost three games in the same sequence as KCCA pulled away.

URA and Tooro, who are currently third and fourth in the standings have meanwhile accumulated 28 points compared to 27 for KCCA but were at least nine points behind at the halfway stage.

The now 13-time league champions are also perhaps the only club with a semblance of stability in a country in which only three topflight league clubs have had the same coach for two seasons or more.
This has allowed coach Mike Mutebi to build a team in his image with the core of the starting team having been at Lugogo for at least four seasons.

Awany, Allan Okello, Muzamir Mutyaba, Jackson Nunda, Julius Poloto, Mustafa Kizza, Filbert Obenchan have all worked with Mutebi since he returned in 2015 either with the senior team or by rising through the ranks.
The new additions have also played their part with Sulaiman ‘Mike’ Mutyaba taking up goal scoring responsibilities towards the end of the first round and start of the second half of the season.

His tally of 10 league goals would have certainly increased had he not suffered an injury that has seen him miss the last four league games.

Patrick Kaddu’s contribution can also not be understated with the striker leading the line at the start of the season and is now the club’s league top scorer with 12 goals.
