Kawolo General Hospital in Buikwe District received at least 908 victims of road accidents in the last three months.
"From June to August this year, we admitted 349 motor vehicle accident victims, 342 boda-boda victims and 217 accident patients categorized as others," said the senior medical superintendent for Kawolo hospital Dr Joshua Kiberu.

Dr Kiberu said on Thursday that the hospital grapples with a challenge of inadequate medical equipment which is worsened by the overwhelming number of accident victims admitted to the hospital every day.
According to him, the highest number of victims comes from Mabira Forest, Namagunga area, Kitega and Bulwantente especially during night hours and rainy seasons.
“We sometimes get victims referred from Buvuma, Sseziwa and Jinja for oxygen,” he said.

Like many government hospitals across the country, Dr Kiberu said they also don’t have enough drugs and human resource to manage the accident victims and this leaves many not attended to in time.
"An accident victim May need more than one doctor to attend to him which is almost impossible whenever we get many critical cases at a time," he added.

He made the remarks after the health facility received a boost to handle several accident cases.
The boost was in form of new equipment which included oxygen machines, wheel chairs and Wall Bp machines, among others from Uganda Insurers Association (UIA).

The UIA chief executive officer, Mr Paul Kavuma said they identified Kawolo hospital for their Corporate Social Responsibility because it is one of those that touches their businesses of insurance.
“From the statistics of June to August, we noticed that the number of accident cases were increasing and we needed to support the some medical facilities. We shall do this routinely,” he said.
