Driwaru elected Yumbe Woman MP

YUMBE. Ms Zaitun Driwaru, an Independent candidate, was declared winner of Yumbe District Woman MP elections held on Wednesday.
The race was between Ms Driwaru and Ms Avako Melsa Naima (NRM). The incumbent MP, Ms Huda Oleru, lost in the NRM primaries and did not contest.
According to the results declared by the district returning officer Ms Gertrude Ajwang, Ms Driwaru garnered 32,504 votes, beating Ms Naima, who polled 24,394 votes.
Ms Ajwang said the Woman MP seat had been contentious and created a lot of hostility among the voters in Yumbe.
Ms Ajwang advised the candidates who have lost in the elections to concede defeat and plan for the next elections.
“People should reconcile, behave maturely and work as a team,” she advised.
The election for the district Woman MP was postponed on February 18 to March 9 due to anomalies on the ballot papers.
On the ballot papers, Ms Naima was given a chair as her symbol instead of the bus, the symbol for NRM candidates.
