Residents and businessmen on Saturday lost property worth millions of shillings to floods after a downpour in the afternoon.

Several cars that were parked at Kame washing bay in Watoni-Mukono were also submerged by the floods.

The other property that was affected include residential houses, Kaggwa restaurant and bar, MM Lodge and kiosks.

Robina Nantaba a business woman in Kame Watoni says that when the floods started, they made an alarm but got no help with recovering their property.

“Most business people had gone to attend a burial in Buikwe and property including vehicles, house hold items and business items were destroyed and some washed away by floods,” Nantaba says.

Vehicles that were submerged had been parked around the washing bay, but the occupants were rescued in time.

She adds the water flooded into both residential and commercial houses as some items were being washed away.

"I didn't save any items in my shop apart from the counter table,” she recounts.

Robert Basulwa one of the car cleaners at washing bay says  they have never experienced this in Kame area. He says the floods were unexpected.

Tina Nasubuga the owner of one of the residential houses says all her property was destroyed. “The beds were soaked in water, but all dishes, saucepans, clothes and other items were washed away.”

“When I saw the floods, my first instinct was to rescue my children, I took off with them abandoning the house,” she says adding that her garden was also ruined.

One of the workers at MM Lodge in watoni Mukono says all the property was damaged and some of the customers who were resting took off without paying bills.

The Mukono Municipality Deputy Mayor Jamada Kajjoba says they have for long warned people against living in wetlands, but the residents have not heed their call

"We reached out to people occupying wetlands and sensitised them about dangers but they sat back," he says.
