Iganga accident victims named

Police have named six of the seven people who perished in a road accident in Namasoga village, along the Jinja-Iganga highway.

The accident occurred on Wednesday night at around 10.30pm, the Iganga traffic police officer, Rogers Nandege, said on Thursday.

He identified the deceased as Faridi Kange Matende, 32, Aggrey Baliluno, 26 and Baker Kange, 29, a resident of Bulanga Village.

Others are Amina Mutesi, Abubaker Bogere, the driver of the coaster and Ahmed Maganda.

“The accident occurred when taxi registration number UAV 157E that was coming from Iganga collided head-on with an omnibus registration number No UAT 805F that was coming from Jinja,” Mr Nandege said.

Mr Nandege added that 15 other people sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Jinja regional referral hospital and Iganga-Nakavule Hospital.

Abdallah Waiswa, one of the survivors, said the taxi was trying to overtake a stationed sugarcane truck which had its lights turned off.

Mr Nandege blamed the taxi driver for speeding while overtaking the stationed tractor.

Namasoga village is fast becoming a black spot, after Walugogo village.

In April, an accident in Namasoga claimed two lives when two taxis collided head-on.

Humps have however, since been put at Walugogo that have reduced on the number of accidents at the spot.
