Fun at the Beach: a new raving spot

What you need to know:

To many, Spenah Beach is an amusement park for the mind. There are innumerable fun activities from marine sports to literally running wild.

Every Saturday afternoon, traffic on Entebbe Road comes to a standstill because almost everyone is heading to the beach to unwind.
Entebbe has become the place to be for great outdoor fun.
With some of the best beaches in the country, the municipality has become popular for its diverse marine sports and white sands.

Last weekend I also joined the bandwagon to have fun at Spenah Beach which has become the ultimate hangout for partiers.
After almost a two-hour drive from Kampala, my journey in the commuter taxi ended at what has been christened as Entebbe town’s last taxi stage.
I got a boda boda from Sebugwawo stage at Shs2,000 to take me to the hangout.
On alighting, I could already hear the tranquil waves of the lake.
Entrance fee was Shs5,000 which I readily paid.

The ambience
This waterfront hangout which neighbours Protea hotel is endowed with large trunk trees and shallow waters.
The beach has a grassthatched bar and wide lawns artistically divided with stone path ways, giving you a feel of the Caribbean in Uganda.

The lawns are dotted with liquor branded umbrella stands fitted with plastic seats for customers.
John Asiimwe Spe, the proprietor who doubles as the beach’s manager tells us that actually part of the beach’s name was derived from his name.
Asked about the “nah” bit of the name, Asiimwe simply brushes it off.
He says, “I would prefer it remains private.”
To stand out from the other beaches along Entebbe Road, this beach has taken aqua sports with a new zeal by adding themed days.

The most famous theme is the ‘beach rave’ which happens every Saturday drawing thousands of fans from as far as Mukono.
Having joined the bandwagon of the beach rave, I ensured I had enough to spend.
On the Saturday I was there, was bikini car wash, a monthly event held every last Saturday of the month.
Here, skimpily dressed women get covered in foam as they wash customers’ vehicles swinging to loud music powered by the well-equipped public sound system the venue offers.

The offers
Beer is sold at a flat rate of Shs5,000 while soft drinks and bottled water is at Shs2,000 per bottle. Like any other hangout, the beach has two major downsides.
For a man on a budget, the prices for their bites may be on the high end. A platter of deep fried fish with french fries and salads is at Shs30,000.

Roasted goat meat costs Shs5,000 per stick while chicken and fries are at Shs15,000 per plate.
The other hiccup is mode of transport.
If you are going to use public means from the beach especially at night, you’ll need to allocate more money for this cause because the fares get hiked. A boda boda that usually charges Shs2,000 to the taxi stage will double this charge while commuter taxis to Kampala will ask for Shs4,000.
Neighbours of this establishment say the beach has a sizeable number of revellers every evening.

Monday and Tuesdays are open days where one can just go and relax without any entrance fees.
Wednesday is Glamourous night which is similar to Campus night in night spots around Kampala.”
Asiimwe quickly adds, “Entrance is free and so is the nyama kyoma (goats meat) plus ladies have cocktails on the house, while Thursday is a night of rock music and Friday old skool reggae.” In essence, it’s only during weekends that revellers pay entrance fee. Asiimwe says unless there is an organised event, they charge Shs3,000 per head.

Try it
The most fascinating sport at the beach is jet skiing.
At Shs30,000 you get to have five minutes on a personal watercraft. This is a great deal compared to the Shs50,000 charged for the same time elsewhere.
The beach’s management also provides ample parking space with dependable security.
From what I experienced that day, Spenah Beach is worth trying out this weekend.
