The Madhvani Foundation through its scholarships Sub-committee has awarded 172 university scholarships worth Shs711million to gifted but financially challenged students for the year 2016/2017 academic year.
It is the 14th consecutive year the Foundation has given out scholarships since it was started in 2003.

According to Gabriel Opio, the Chairman of the Scholarship Sub – committee, the Foundation received over 1,100 applications from all regions of the country of which 338 were shortlisted for final face to face interviews.
“The final list of students chosen represent the most promising and deserving students we were able to find. We are confident they will complete their studies and go on to lay a valuable role in the development of the country,” Mr Opio said.

The Eastern region dominated the number of scholarships awarded with 33 per cent while the central region came second with 27 per cent. Of the professional courses, engineering and commerce disciplines were awarded the largest percentage with 43 per cent and 37 per cent followed by Medicine 27 per cent and Agriculture 21 per cent respectively.

“This is in line with the vision of the founder of the Madhvani Group who believed that the secret to Uganda’s development lay in the education of its people in science and technical courses” explained Gerald Ssendaula, the Foundation Chairman.

He also encouraged gifted but financially challenged students to apply for scholarships in the 2017-2018.
Successful candidates were advised to pick their forms with proper proof of identification from 31st August 2016.
