Kampala. Two weeks ago, on a very rainy and cold morning, Gayaza High School students welcomed the rest of the country as Uganda celebrated the International Olympic Day.
Dr Maggie Kigozi, a former student of Gayaza, led the celebrations that included a road run, tag rugby, volleyball, basketball, football and archery events on June 20.

Kigozi, who played tennis in her heyday, called on girls to take sports seriously as it shapes them into responsible people.
A day before, Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) had started the celebrations by inviting several sports stakeholders to watch The John Akii-Bua’s story: An African Tragedy. The documentary, screened during the Euro African Kampala Film Festival at the The Hub, Cineplex Oasis Mall, left many in tears.

Ugandans wondered why Akii-Bua, the country’s first Olympic gold medallist, was left to die like a pauper after retirement.
A week later, UOC and Uganda Police, announced plans to construct a modern High Performance Centre in honour of the 400m hurdles runner.
