Vice President Jesca Alupo has lauded the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) for developing the new Muslim constitution.

Ms Alupo said the new constitution is in line with the government‘s plan to economically empower youth and women.

“We are further proud that the government funded the enormous exercise to collect people’s views and come up with such a historical document in the time of your leadership,” she said.

She was speaking on Friday during the annual national Iftar dinner organised by UMSC at Old Kampala mosque.
The Vice President also pledged the government’s continued partnership with the Muslim leadership and community in a bid to create wealth in people’s households and kick out poverty.

“It is during the NRM government that the Grand National Mosque was built at Old Kampala and establishment of the Islamic University in Uganda and the recent Salaam Bank, which is going to operate according to Islamic practice,” she said.

Speaking at the same dinner, First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga also applauded the new Muslim constitution.

“As leaders, we need support from different institutions such as religious institutions because for them, they have access to reach people in their communities,” Ms Kadaga said.

The Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Mubajje, requested the international donor community to continue supporting UMSC activities on grounds that they have several projects that support the women and youth.

“After renewing the leadership of UMSC from the village level to national, we have brought capable people on board to run the council programmes and hope that all Muslims across the country will be catered for,” he said.

He also revealed that UMSC has finalised plans to start constructing 10 Muslim regional headquarters with the aim of improving service delivery across the country for Muslim community.
